Almost everyone agrees that Cee-Lo's hit single "Forget You" wink wink! Spin made it their 1 and Rolling Stone 2 in the year end polls--amazing for the mainstream edge of the music media to be proclaiming the virtues of a song with the F-bomb in the chorus! It's a highly deserved follow up to his '06 hit "Crazy," recorded with Danger Mouse as Gnarls Barkley, but for me this cements his reputation as a singles guy. A whole album of his riotous genre-hopping is a hard sell, literally leading to him being dropped by his old label Jive after his previous solo albums. Perhaps tempered by this experience, you can feel him trying to reign himself on his new one, The Lady Killer , attempting to wrap the album in a concept that will make it work.
Cee-Lo Green Is the Soul Machine declared his follow-up. And if there was still any doubt that Cee-Lo loved high concepts, next came his Danger Mouse collaboration, Gnarls Barkley, and all of its costumed glory. Cee-Lo's third solo album is simply called The Lady Killer , but given his track record it's pretty obvious who that lady killer is meant to be. Admittedly, releasing a kiss-off single called "Fuck You" is not the usual MO of your typical ladies man, but then, there's nothing typical about Cee-Lo, a self-styled eccentric at once rooted in the formalism of classic soul but happily subverting the rules when the mood strikes. Motown, Stax, Philadelphia International-- all those familiar templates are on the table, but no one would ever confuse Cee-Lo's updates of revivalism or pastiche. Still, as conspicuous an anchor as "Fuck You" may be, it's not the only thing the album has going for it.
I f Cee Lo Green's new solo album sounds calculated to generate hits and appeal to the widest possible audience, at the expense of his usual freewheeling inventiveness, that's because, without any attempt to disguise the fact, it is. In a recent interview, the singer explained that he had reined in his more outre creative urges on The Lady Killer in order to achieve the megastardom he feels has been eluding him. His gambit, accordingly, has been to release a song about betrayal, bitterness and financial inadequacy entitled "Fuck You". This might seem gloriously misguided to anyone who doesn't remember "Crazy", the eerie Gnarls Barkley number about mental instability that Green, with his super-sized vocal talent, turned into a worldwide smash in Sure enough, "Fuck You" is one of this year's most uplifting releases, with a chorus that makes you want to punch the air and imprecate cheerfully at total strangers.
